Can distressed tiles work in modern kitchens?
Yes — when paired with sleek cabinetry and modern fixtures, distressed tiles add contrast and designer sophistication.
What is the best color subway tile for bathroom?
- White: Classic, brightens space, works with any decor - best for small bathrooms and timeless design
- Grey: Sophisticated, hides dirt, versatile - best for modern bathrooms
- Black: Bold, dramatic, luxurious - best for large bathrooms with good lighting
- Blue/Green: Calming, spa-like - best for creating relaxing atmosphere

What is the best pattern for subway tile in a shower?
The best pattern depends on your design goals:
- Running Bond: Most water-resistant due to staggered joints, easiest installation
- Vertical Stack: Modern look, makes showers feel taller
- Herringbone: Most visually striking but requires professional installation
- Brick Pattern: Classic, timeless, good water resistance
How do you lay subway tiles in a shower?
Laying subway tiles in a shower requires proper waterproofing and precise installation:
- Waterproof the Walls
Install cement board, apply a waterproof membrane, seal all joints and corners, and allow it to fully cure. - Plan the Layout
Start from the bottom, center the main wall, mark level guidelines, and dry-lay tiles to avoid uneven cuts. - Install the Tiles
Apply thin-set mortar with a notched trowel, press tiles firmly in place, use spacers for even grout lines, and clean excess mortar immediately. - Finish Corners & Cuts
Use bullnose tiles or trim, cut accurately around fixtures, and leave gaps at corners filled with flexible caulk. - Grout & Seal
After curing, apply mildew-resistant grout, clean thoroughly, seal the grout, and caulk all corners with silicone.
Do subway tiles ever go out of style?
No. Their simplicity and flexibility make them a permanent classic in interior design.
