How do you lay subway tiles in a shower?

Laying subway tiles in a shower requires proper waterproofing and precise installation:

  1. Waterproof the Walls
    Install cement board, apply a waterproof membrane, seal all joints and corners, and allow it to fully cure.
  2. Plan the Layout
    Start from the bottom, center the main wall, mark level guidelines, and dry-lay tiles to avoid uneven cuts.
  3. Install the Tiles
    Apply thin-set mortar with a notched trowel, press tiles firmly in place, use spacers for even grout lines, and clean excess mortar immediately.
  4. Finish Corners & Cuts
    Use bullnose tiles or trim, cut accurately around fixtures, and leave gaps at corners filled with flexible caulk.
  5. Grout & Seal
    After curing, apply mildew-resistant grout, clean thoroughly, seal the grout, and caulk all corners with silicone.
