Do Zellige tiles require sealing?

It depends on the tile type. Authentic, handcrafted Zellige tiles — especially those that are unglazed or fired at lower temperatures — should be sealed. Sealing helps prevent staining, protects the grout, and keeps the tiles looking vibrant over time. Zellige-style tiles, made from glazed porcelain or ceramic, are distinct. Because they are factory-produced with a built-in protective glaze, they do not require sealing. At Mineral Tiles, all of our Zellige-style porcelain and ceramic tiles are non-porous and do not require sealing.

Which areas are best for Zellige tiles?

Zellige tiles are ideal for interior wall applications, including kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms, showers, fireplace surrounds, and decorative feature walls. They bring rich color and texture to a space without being exposed to the wear and tear of high-traffic flooring. Some Zellige-style porcelain tiles may be suitable for low-traffic floors; however, it’s essential to confirm this with the manufacturer before installation.

Is zellige hard to maintain and clean?

A genuine artisanal Zellige tile is textured and porous, so it should be cleaned gently with a pH-neutral soap and a soft cloth. It should also be resealed every few years, and abrasive cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage. Zellige-style porcelain or ceramic tiles are designed to look like handmade tiles but perform like standard glazed porcelain or ceramic tiles. They do not require sealing and are easier to maintain.
