Do Zellige tiles require sealing?
It depends on the tile type. Authentic, handcrafted Zellige tiles — especially those that are unglazed or fired at lower temperatures — should be sealed. Sealing helps prevent staining, protects the grout, and keeps the tiles looking vibrant over time. Zellige-style tiles, made from glazed porcelain or ceramic, are distinct. Because they are factory-produced with a built-in protective glaze, they do not require sealing. At Mineral Tiles, all of our Zellige-style porcelain and ceramic tiles are non-porous and do not require sealing.
Is zellige hard to maintain and clean?
A genuine artisanal Zellige tile is textured and porous, so it should be cleaned gently with a pH-neutral soap and a soft cloth. It should also be resealed every few years, and abrasive cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage. Zellige-style porcelain or ceramic tiles are designed to look like handmade tiles but perform like standard glazed porcelain or ceramic tiles. They do not require sealing and are easier to maintain.
Can Zellige tiles be used on floors or in showers?
Yes — Zellige tiles can be installed on shower walls and low-traffic floors if they are rated for that use. However, they should be avoided in high-traffic areas or locations exposed to freeze-thaw conditions unless the manufacturer specifically approves them. Zellige-style ceramic or porcelain tiles, which are factory-made to mimic the look of handmade Zellige, are more durable and can often be used in higher-traffic areas. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications to confirm the tile’s suitability for your project.
